Congrats for Indy and Mazzy for this beautiful tangle! Again, I have used watercolours  to create the background. Zingo (with a black aura) looks a bit behind Jetties, Tipple and Cruffle. To make the colours stronger, I used also ordinary colourpencils and a white gelpen for the highlights.

Oh, my! Such depth and feeling through the colors, shading and highlights! A delight for the eyes, Ria. The colored pencils on watercolor work beautifully. I’ll have to try that. Thanks, as always, for the inspiration and joy you share with us.

Thank you Jennifer for your kind words. I agree that the colors give lovely results, it is not difficult, and always a surprise. I’m gonna explain that technique in my next post on my blog at the end of the month. When there is already watercolour on the tile, it is so easy to make the colours a bit stronger by using ordinary colorpencils.

This is gorgeous and your tangling took on a different dimension since you started using colours. Lovely! (perhaps I must also make time to use make more colourful backgrounds)

      Ria Matheussen says:

Thank you Susan for this nice compliment. About two years ago, I followed a few lessons of watercolourpainting. (especially to create backgrounds) This is a very pleasant and easy technique and beautiful in combination with Zentangle. Somethimes I like to draw just black/white,or I take my colourpencils but other times I need to create more colour. It is nice to bring some variation.
At the end of this month, I will write a post of this technique on my blog.

Thank you Heike. I saw your entry too and I do like very much your wonderful ZIngo, drawn with nice shadow on that black background.

What a sumptuous color wash you’ve created with Zingo and your 3Z. Beautiful work.

Fabulous Zingo Ria! I love that it’s not symmetrical! Really adds to the composition. Beautiful colours you used for the background! 🙂

      Ria Matheussen says:

Thank you very much Deanne. Watercolours never disappoint me. Most of the time, I just let them flow and when the tile is dry, I see better where I have to tangle and to use a bit more the colourpencils.

  7. 35

Oh…. so lovely! Your tile makes me think of a lovely underwater bubbly creature. I adore it! Wonderful use of color, the bold darkened aura, and highlights to make a wonderful composition.

Beautiful as always Ria! I keep thinking I should try and make some watercolour backgrounds but I never get around to it.

    • 34
      Ria Matheussen says:

Yes Trudi, you should try it once, using watercolours to create a background is not difficult, I just let the colours flow. Sometimes I even blow to let them flow into another direction. It is pleasant and give surprising results. Thank you for your kind comment.

Mooie tile!

    Duane says:

Hi Ria, Nice to see you and your art work again. I really like your 3Z tile effort with Zingo that is dropping Cruffles and Jetties out the bottom. That is a different kind of design with a really smooth and cleanly drawn tangle. I think you included some colors on the tile as well (hard for me to tell due to color blindness), but I really like the presentation you made.

      Ria Matheussen says:

Zingo is a very pleasant pattern with many possibilities to variate. I like that and have tried to do so on my tile. I love to use watercolours because you never know the final result, I just let the colours flow and when the tile is dry, I see the best places to tangle on. Colours can be nice but the most important in the Zentanglemethod are the forms. To create layers, nice contrasts and shadows will give your tiles always a little extra and can be as beautiful as colored ones. I’m sorry to hear you can’t see colours but, as I said, it is not important to create nice tiles. Thank you Duane for your nice comment.
