A few years ago, on a warm summerevening, I discovered a beautiful butterfly in our garden. I decided to start a book with  pictures of those wonderful little creatures, only taken by myself. Despite of Belgium has not a tropical climate, meanwhile I got quiet a nice collection of which I’m very proud.  Around every picture , I have drawn an uncomplicated tangle, matching to those little jewels… You can see two examples of my collection:

Due to increasing  pain and arthrosis on my back/neck/shoulder/wrist,  medecins advised me to take more rest, doing special exercises and go to the therapist.  I have no other choice than take a  long break and change my habits to become better. I wish everyone lots of tanglepleasure and send you all warm regards from Belgium.

      Hartelijke groeten

Thank you very much Anita, I do appreciate your comment very much and I’m glad you like “my” butterflies. I hope to “catch” a few more during the summer…
I really enjoyed drawing Zentangleart and I won’t stop drawing but I have to take more rest and change my habits. I hope to be back in a few months.
Wish you all the best and a nice summertime (I enjoy watching the Scandinavian thrillers on Netflix, there are soooo goood, I’m a big fan)
Warm regards from Belgium and take care!

Dear Ria, your butterflies are wonderful. I myself know times when pain disturbs the normal life. Summertime helps the therapy and exercises with warm weather. And sometimes a few tangles bring a little distraction. Let a little time go and sure you feel better soon. Best wishes from Germany, Margarete

Vielen Dank Margarete für die liebe Wörter.
I won’t stop tangling but I really have to slow down a lot and change my (wrong) habits. I ignored too long the pain that increases while drawing. Doing exercises, walking, going tho the wellness, and rest more can give good results in only a few months, so I have no much choice.
Take good care of yourself too, have a wonderful summertime and I send you warm regards from Belgium.

Ria, your tangled butterfly cards are very unique and beautiful. I am very sorry to learn about the orthopedic problems you are experiencing. Last summer, I had a tendonitis in my dominant hand and wrist that made tangling very painful. It was very difficult for me to stay away from it and I probably prolonged my recovery time by not being a very good patient—in other words, I was an impatient patient. Last September, I damaged both my shoulders placing suitcases in an overhead bin while traveling. I am still having problems with reaching and lifting. The silver lining is that my tangling hand is unaffected. I am sending you positive thoughts for a speedy recovery.

Thank you so much Suzanne for your kind words. Just like you, I’m an impatient patient and I wanted to stay busy. I had already a longer time problems due to differents factors: age, an accident years ago and two operations on my back, wrong attitudes (sitting too long while drawing and in front of the computer) and genetic factors. I ignored them too long. With a lot of pain in my heart, it is the best solution to change my habits and take a long break… I hope to get much better in a few months.I wish you a nice summer and please, you too, it is necessary to take good care of ourself!!! Sending you warm regards from Belgium

Beautiful butterflies with delicate tangles, Ria. I wonder how many different butterfly images you have in your collection. In Bangkok we have a butterfly garden, you would love it! Anyway, it is nice to get a glimpse of you. Thinking of you every day. XOXO

      Ria Matheussen says:

Thank you Susie for your kind comment.
At the moment, I have pictures of 37 different kinds of butterflies. (most of them embellished by simple tangles) I hope to add every year a few more. It is really not so easy to “catch” them in a colder country as Belgium. I’m sure there are a lot more in Thailand but I only collect the ones, seen in Belgium. I can imagine a butterfly garden in Thailand…

  12. 30

This is wonderful! I love the way the butterflies meld with the tangles! Be well! I too struggle with pain and problems from neck to fingers. I know you will heal well and perhaps enjoy a small break…of courses our break is tangling! Sending much love!❤️

      Ria Matheussen says:

Thank you Cyndee for your sweet comment. Moving, doing exercises, taking little naps, those things can make my complaints lesser. Always sitting in front of the computer and drawing gives more pain at the moment. So I have not so much choice and it is really time to take a longer break. Please take good care of yourself and enjoy the summertime. I send you warm regards from Belgium.

How beautiful your butterfly art is, Ria! I’m sorry that you are having health issues. It just doesn’t seem right that we have to accept pain as part of the aging process. I hope your therapy helps.

Thank you Jean for always giving me nice comments. My collection of butterflies is very precious for me. I remember where and when I have found each one. I thought combining the butterflies with a little Zentangleart would be nice, I’m glad you like the result.
I’m grateful that I can do still many things. I like to cook and to read, Summer is coming, time to make nice walks and go swimming… and maybe “catch” a few other butterflies… but it is really necessary to change my habits, to move and to rest more… Me too hope that the therapy will help.

    Ria,
Your idea for “capturing” butterflies and then drawing around them was a good one. They all look beautiful much like most of our natural surroundings. You have done a great job with these.
