Sometimes it is nice to see your progress, we all can grow. You can see that very good in this challenge. The first tile is made, a few weeks after I discovered Zentangle.  At that time, I liked the drawing very much but now, I see, there are a lot of details who needed to draw with more care. That is why I re-created this tile. It looks now completely different: it is drawn with more attention and the shadows are more subtile. I didn’t draw Crescent Moon anymore and also the circle looks completely different: I used Zander for the border and  inside I have drawn a llittle Fengle, Printemps, Shattuck, some Perfs and added a little colour.

A new week and a new challenge. I find the combination black and red very dramatic. Therefore I have chosen for a simple design. I have used only the beautiful tangle Blooming Butter of Shelly Baugh,Tipple, Printemps and N’Zeppel.

More than 10 years ago, RIck and Maria developed their Zentanglemethod.  Now there are thousands of people around the world who follow  this unique drawing style and they all love it. Over the years there have been many patterns  added. As I wrote in my older article, some are ideal to put somewhere in the middle of your drawing. Other motives are more suitable to form a frame... For the further interpretation,  the possibilities are countless… With gridpatterns you always get nice results. Read the steps well and before you know,  you have mastered the motive. Cool, easy examples to start are: Bales,  Cubine, Dex, Florz, Knightbridge
Tipple, a  simple  pattern is also one of my favorites. I like to use it very often. You can always fill little open spaces with this tangle ( perfs) Below I have posted a picture of an  older tile with just this  pattern: the string is a circle and inside and on the background you can see only circles.  I have used  my regular black pen, a white gellypen  and regular color pencils. The black pieces were colored with a brushpen.

At this moment, I am about 2 years “hookedand I always pay attention because I like to find a new pattern. A few weeks ago, I saw a picture of a screen and all of a sudden I knew it!   That pattern did not exist already.  I worked  out the steps and sent it  to Linda Farms (  On June, the 13 th., an email  was sent and I knew immediately Paravan became an official tangle. Of course,  I am  very happy and especially because the publication was on a thirteenth. So you see that 13 is not an unlucky number. On the contrary, get rid of all that superstition, it is just an ordinary day like all others.

On Friday the 13th October 1307, all  Knights Templar were arrested and killed on the orders of Philip the fair. This is one of the causes why the 13th  (especially if the day  falls on a Friday) will not be a lucky day. Pure superstition!. Around the history of the Knights of the Templar, there is always an atmosphere of mystery  and when I was younger I have red a lot of books about this interesting history.

I have found a nice quote from the Dalai Lama, and of course I agree:

I have found inspiration to draw Paravan when I saw this picture:

The steps, a few variations and a tile with my new tangle:

Zentangle pattern: Paravan.

Another tile with Printemps , Paravan and “Beads of courage”

Meanwhile, the third mosaicproject of Annette is also done, below you can see my contribution. It’s quite fascinating to work on a group project. You never know how Annette will put all those differents tiles together but I always like the results By this way: thank you dear Annette for this nice experience and of course I will join the fourth one.

The schoolyear in the” Doppahuis” was terminated with a basic workshop. Again the students were very excited and that is pleasant for all of us. Along this road, I would like to thank all participants for their commitment and I would like to congratulate them with their  results. More lessons will taken place in September and October and a new 3 piece- workshop will be organised  in november, december and January.

Just like me,  others are also looking for  new patterns. A wonderful tangle, ( at the moment not officially recognized) is Skye  by Margaret Bremner. It is a high-focus pattern, not simple but beautiful and with the necessary exercise, I managed to see the logic steps in it. On the 270 th Diva’ challenge, you can admire what many people have done with this tangle!

This picture was taken, last summer, during a trip in the Highlands where I have visited the beautiful Isle of Skye. That is why I have draw  Skye abough.
Just see and listen a few minutes  to this beautiful celtic song:

“Beads of courage” is een heel mooi initiatief en dat is ook deze challenge! Alhoewel ik erg veel van waterverf hou, heb ik dit niet kunnen gebruiken op mijn tile. Ik ben deze week op bezoek bij één van de zonen in Antwerpen. De meeste van mijn ” Zentanglespullen” liggen thuis in de Ardennen.  Vandaar dat ik alleen met pennen en kleurpotloden gewerkt heb. Op de achtergrond zie je mijn nieuwe tangle Paravan.

Beads of courage is a very nice project and so is this challenge! I really like to draw with watercolor but I couldn’t use it on this tile.  I’m spending a few days in Antwerp with my eldest son. Most of my  “Zentanglestuff ” is at home in the other part of the country. So I used only pens and pencils. Behind you can see my new tangle Paravan.

To be honest, this is not my idea. A few weeks ago, Jane Reiter was was the guest on the Diva’s challenge( number 261), she was inspired by the online book of Sandy Steen Bartolomew and she proposed to make stacked tiles.
This was such an original and funny challenge and I decided to write a bit more in one of my articles on my blog..
Stacked tiles are both great for beginners and for advanced students. You can  draw on white paper but you can also make the combination of white and coloured pieces or you can choose only coloured tiles… . You can use pencils, pens, markers, paint The tiles can be stacked in different ways: symmetric or asymmetric, that is your choice. You can complete each tile separately or you can draw your motives fluently over different tiles. Actually all patterns are possible but there are typical bordertangles, such as  Keeko, Zenith, Hibred … just to name a few. Also Akoya is a wonderful pattern to create a border. For the smallest tile you can choose a larger pattern like to Ellish, aquafleur, Cyme.. but also here the possibilities are innumerable. Please refer to the well-known site and decide which motives you are going to draw. Let your imagination work and enjoy!!!
I have made two examples of stacked tiles and  I ‘ ve put them  in 2 frames:

Just for the fun,  I have made a third example, quite different from the 2 previous ones, but I am also happy with the result.

I enjoyed this challenge but it needed some time: first of all you have to cut  the different tiles very  carefully. The advantage is that you can make the pieces separately. You don’t have to finish the whole work at once, you can make some borders today or tomorrow and next week the other ones… I have used 6 layers  but you can also  use  2, 3 or 4 tiles and having a nice result. You can also go for  circles, triangles, ovals and even irregular shapes. You can  make this work on your own  but also it is possible to make stacked tiles with differtent people and everyone can make his own border.
It’s already June, time slips through my fingers, too quick!!!
In Belgium, Spring was wet and  fresh and we long for dryer summerdays. Every year, I feel that my resistance is a little lower in this period  and  it is necessary  to work a bit harder to get a better condition and to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables… I like very much, sitting on a chair and drawing a whole day , but that is absolutely wrong: diversification of activity, alternating attitude, diversification of food … it’s really important. I want to remain active  as long as possible and sometimes that requires an effort.

quite tasty and healthy with those delicious fresh dips: hummus, guacamole and tzaziki

We, Belgian are always complaining about the weather, and yes there are somethimes gloomy days with lots of rain and wind.
But on the other side:  the smell in the woods after a rainy day can be delicious. I smell here now everywhere the spicy scents of flowering broom and the Hague rose and there are so many other blossoms who give a wonderful perfume to enjoy.  It smells a lot better than the artificiel ones you can buy! . Soon will grow the wild Honeysuckle who will really brighten up the summer evenings.

I travelled a lot and when I came  in the duty free shop, I tried all these “attractive” perfumes. Every  time it was the same: I put so much perfume on my arms that I became always sick in the plane. Now , I never do that again.
I have  learned to enjoy the use of essential oil.  You will get a delicious “feeling of being in the wood”  when you put a few drops of pine into a burner. Alertness and more attention you will get by Rosemary (do not use if you go to sleep, it works really exciting and is ideal if you you need to focus). On the other hand, a few drops of true lavender oil on the pillow before going to sleep, will help migraines and will calm you. Orange blossom reminds me of my childhood because this oil is used in marzipan and with Christmas is was always there. A little drop on my handkerchief or my wrist smells lovely and makes me always cheerful. Eucaliptus lighten up when you catch a cold.
There are so many pure essential oils that  can give you, when properly use, more welfare on a soft, natural way. There are cheaper and more expensive oils, but you need just a llittle. It is important  to inform  how, where and for which target you can use the oil.

geurverdamper keramiek

To end this article, I show you a tile of Maria Thomas with the beautiful pattern Verdigogh. She found inspiration to create this tangle in a little twig of pine.
If you pay attention while walking you will see that there are a lot of patterns based on what nature  gives us. Maybe you can also  discover a hidden, unknown tangle!!!
I wish you good luck and until next time.
